Catholic Memorial Tops Divine Savior

The Midwest Girls High School Rugby Championship was held this past weekend and a new champion emerged. Divine Savior, who had won every Midwest championship since 2003 was bested by Wisconsin rival Catholic Memorial 25-22. Both teams have pulled away from the rest of the Midwest pack with Catholic Memorial beating Lane Tech 69-10, and Warsaw 66-12. Divine Savior won both their matches over Hudson 60-0, and St. Joseph 71-7. In the final, both sides traded leads with Catholic Memorial pulling ahead to stay with 5 minutes left.

The club division had a close final as well, with two Ohio teams in the finals. Walnut Hills edged Brunswick 22-17. To reach the finals, Brunswick won matches over Pulaski 21-14, and KC United 34-15. Walnut Hills won their matches over Hopkins 40-10, and Brookfield 15-7.

Perrysburg(OH) bested Amherst(OH) 22-15 in the Open Division Championship and Divine Savior won the JV Championship.

High School Girls Play for Midwest Championship

This weekend teams from seven states will converge on the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Indiana for the Midwest High School Girls Championship. The School Division will be a strong field of 8 with Catholic Memorial from Wisconsin earning the top seed. Last year's national champion, Divine Savior, (Also from Wisconsin) will provide stiff competition. Rounding out the school bracket will be Lane Tech (IL), Grandville (MI), Warsaw (IN), St. Joseph Academy (OH), Penn (IN) and Hudson (OH).

In the Club Division, last year's Midwest Champion - Hopkins out of Minnesota will return along with Brookfield (WI), KC United (MO), Pulaski (WI), Walnut Hills (OH) and Brunswick (OH). It is a very even field, and it's anyone's guess as to who will come out on top.

The Open Bracket will be strong again with Oak Creek (WI), Perrysburg (OH) and Amherst (OH) competing for the Open Championship.
